Tomorrow, Saturday 22 August marks the start of the Beijing 2015 World Championships. I will actually be up in Scotland attending my first ever Edinburgh Fringe followed by a day at the Scottish Athletics Age Group Championships in Grangemouth but will be making sure I keep up-to-date, whilst on the go.
August is ordinarily a really hectic month for me but with my current injury – I've made the conscious effort to get out and do things I don’t usually get the chance to.
My boyfriend, Michael Rimmer, is competing on the first morning at 4.50am, in the men's 800m heats. I am currently having an internal dilemma as to whether I set my alarm or not! Laura Muir goes in the 1500m heats just before – so I may kill two GB birds with one stone.
Thankfully, the evening sessions begin from 11am onwards – a much more reasonable time to be awake. Usually, the first few days are all preliminary rounds but Mo Farah goes in the men's 10,000m final which is definitely not one to miss at 13.50 on Saturday.
On Sunday, competitors in the Men’s 800m and the Women’s 1500m have it pretty tough. Making it through to the next round means they have back to back races over the weekend with their semi-final taking place Sunday evening. No rest for the wicked.
The blue ribbon event, the Men's 100m final, takes place on Sunday 14.15. Usain Bolt features with his main threat for the title being Justin Gatlin. I find this sad, as Gatlin is an athlete who has failed previous drug tests not once, but twice. I truly believe the system needs to change in order to reduce doping in our sport. Not allowing athletes like this into major championships would be a small step but an important one to deter others from making the same mistakes.
