The Yard is a purpose built indoor and outdoor adventure playground for children and young people with disabilities to play without feeling different or isolated. Our volunteers spent an afternoon of manual labour tidying and enhancing facilities for the children.
Lindsays 200 is a year-long charity initiative as part of our bicentenary celebrations that has enabled members of our Edinburgh team to take part in this invaluable volunteering project to help an incredibly worthwhile cause.
Our willing volunteers undertook all manner of tasks and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. They pruned bushes and trees, cut the grass, watered anything that needed watering, sanded down and re-oiled picnic tables, and hammered nails into a decked walkway to provide grip for safety.
However, it wasn’t all hard work, they did make sure the go-carts were running properly and finished the day sitting in the sun tearing fabric into ribbons for some of the creative projects arranged for The Yard’s visitors.
Next year The Yard will have been providing unique and dynamic adventure experiences, enjoyed by more than 2000 children and young people with additional support needs, every year for 30 years. They also provide respite for parents and siblings of the children through offering invaluable reassurance that they can relax knowing their child is safe, having fun and making friends.
Due to the success of the Yard, the demand for similar projects elsewhere has been identified and their vision is to set up projects in other areas. At the moment this is the only such service in the East of Scotland and families travel from all over to spend an afternoon at a place that caters for their children’s complex needs.
