Four members of staff from our Glasgow office helped out at two of Sense Scotland’s summer events for children with communication needs as part of our year-long 200 charity initiative celebrating our bicentenary.
Alison Atack and Alison McKee, partners in our Private Client and Family Law teams respectively, had a rewarding time with the children and their families who joined in on Thursday 30 July at Active in the Park at Cumbernauld Community Park.
The following week, Claire McCracken, Partner in our Corporate team, and Nicola Ker, Solicitor in Private Client, volunteered at Picnic in the Park at the same location.
Both events were part of a busy programme of activities organised by the charity for children with communication needs and their families over the school holidays. At Picnic in the Park there were various activity stations including: bubbles, archery, a smoothie cycle (a stationary bicycle which uses pedal power to convert soft fruit into a delicious, healthy smoothie), a musical instruments station as well as games and balls to play with.
The sun came out and everyone had great fun with the smoothie cycle proving a particular hit (with both children and volunteers) and the selection of African Drums on the instruments station which allowed the children to perform a very unique and inspiring rendition of ‘Let it go’ from Frozen.
Nicola commented: “The music station was particularly moving as all the children could take part and they loved expressing themselves through that medium. It was amazing to see children who had 5 minutes earlier been hiding behind their parents, take to the microphone and sing to a field full of people.
“The volunteers that we were supporting were very welcoming and are incredible people who have an amazing bond with the children. What really amazed me was the way the touch, taste, feel or sound of the activities brought the children out of their shells.”
Sense Scotland, which started as a small local charity 30 years ago, has grown nationally and now supports individuals with all sorts of communications needs in thousands of projects and services all over the UK.
