Our archives show a lengthy genealogy of firms that have merged with us or asked us to take over their client list. Indeed, Messrs Fothringham and Lindsay originally set up their firm in 1815 because another lawyer said they were “clever young men”, and that, since he was “becoming an old man”, they were welcome to his business.
We will refrain here from giving a complete account of the various mergers – the list of names would sound much like someone reading a phone directory. But we will highlight a few important mergers in recent years. These have grown Lindsays from a medium-sized Edinburgh firm to a full-service modern law firm with offices across Scotland. They’ve helped us grow from 11 partners in the early 1990s to 38 partners and 215 staff today.
This month our firm has merged with RSB Macdonald in Dundee. The firm is known as RSB Lindsays in Dundee and enhances our full service offering to clients across Tayside.
We gained our first presence in Tayside when we merged with Shield & Kyd, which itself had nineteenth-century origins and offices in Dundee and Edinburgh. The 2012 merger was described by Lindsays’ Managing Partner, Alasdair Cummings, as “a perfect fit” and we continue to go from strength to strength in this region.
2012 also brought a merger with MacLachlan & MacKenzie of Edinburgh, known for its strength in residential property and private client work.
Another key deal in Lindsays’ recent expansion was a merger with Glasgow-based Kidstons in 2008, which had a strong reputation in employment, litigation, private client and residential property. The westward expansion was a major strategic development for Lindsays – not just a matter of gaining new premises and staff, but a statement of ambition.
All our mergers bring new talent and new clients, and are exciting times. But we don’t let the excitement detract from our traditional tenets of relationships, results, approachability and flexibility.
Whichever office you deal with, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Dundee, we still aim for the best experience and outcomes for you, your family or your business.
