2015 started very quietly for me. After spending Christmas week with my family in Qatar, it was time to ease into the New Year with a 12 hour flight the following day! Due to my previous heart problems, I have been unable to join the GB Endurance athletes out in Kenya this year, so was offered to join the sprint camp in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
It is my first time venturing to SA and I have enjoyed it so far, although it has been completely different to any other training camps I have attended. Being an endurance athlete surrounded by sprinters has made me realise how different the individual events are within athletics!
Our training schedules are worlds apart with the majority of them training once a day. The sprinters still can't believe I have to go out running twice a day, every day and that I am jogging for more than 10 minutes at a time! However, it has made me realise how strict they are with eating routines. As I run 70 miles a week – I can afford to eat what I want and my diet is very carb-based, a lot of pasta and rice. The sprinters are the complete opposite – relying mainly on protein. It's definitely taken me a few days to adjust to this and has meant I have spent a lot of time in the supermarket picking up extra food for me to snack on!
The whole experience has been a positive one and I'm looking forward to getting into some proper training again.
