We are delighted to announce our continuing support of Dare Academy, Abertay University’s acclaimed gaming competition to uncover the next generation of Scottish computer games creators for blockbuster success.
The annual game design competition, which we have backed with sponsorship and mentorship since 2017, is designed to not only ensure that creators have technical skills but that they are equipped with critical legal and business know-how too.
The programme will see six teams of Abertay undergraduate students develop a game prototype this summer, competing for the top prize of £5,000 and to showcase their games.
Dare’s strength is that it replicates an industry environment, challenging students to work together across the disciplines of the courses offered by the School of Design and Informatics to produce a new game under time pressure.
Our lawyers will share advice regarding the legalities of the games industry and offering tips and guidance on key corporate and employment matters.
Alastair Smith, a Director in our Corporate and Commercial team, is part of the team at the firm who supports those taking part. He said: "The talent that the Dare Academy unlocks is amazing. The fact that, time and again, those who take part go on to be involved in blockbuster releases stands testament to that. We are delighted to be supporting it once again.
It’s always fascinating to get a glimpse into the creative mind of those behind the games. As they develop their concepts, our aim is to give them the tools they need to ensure that not only their creativity flourishes, but their business potential too.
By helping them to understand their legal rights and responsibilities - whether they be about intellectual property, copyright, employment issues or anything else - we hope that the rounded experience of the academy will be a real springboard to success.”
The competition’s other sponsors this year are Henderson Loggie and Epic Games.
Dare Academy has a long track record of producing successful start-up companies, with teams including Bit Loom, Puny Astronaut and many others going on to achieve critical and commercial success as fully-fledged businesses.
Dr Dayna Galloway, Head of Abertay’s Division of Games and Arts, said: “We are extremely grateful to all of our Dare Academy sponsors for their support this year. These partners will bring unique insight and expertise to Dare which will be invaluable to every student taking part. This will assist the Dare teams not only throughout the summer months of the competition, but on into their careers post university.”
