Hundreds of club athletes battled team-mates, opponents and the elements in Falkirk in the 2017 National Cross Country Championships event held last weekend (Saturday 25 February) at Callendar Park. This marked the conclusion of the third year of the Lindsays Cross Country Season, with the overall finisher numbers of 1717 being the highest since joint championships for men and women began in 1994.
This year the senior women’s race took place over a longer distance of 10km, with a record 269 women finishing. There was also a record number in the men’s race, with the 647 finishers including our Chief Operating Officer Ian Beattie who was running in his 22nd National Cross Country Championship. We were delighted to be joined on the day by Sports Minister, Aileen Campbell, who admitted to being inspired as she witnessed the feel-good factor which is coursing through athletics in Scotland currently.
Olympian Callum Hawkins and Scotland International Morag MacLarty took the winners titles in the Senior Men’s and Women’s races respectively. Full results are available here.
Video highlights of the championships and interviews with some of the winners can be found here.
We will be presenting the Lindsays trophy in due course which is awarded to the club with the highest number of finishers at the three key National XC events – the National Relays, National Short Course Champs and the National XC itself.
Our partnership with Scottishathletics also allows members and clubs to benefit from an exclusive package of legal services that will result in further investment in the club network.
