Adoption Week Scotland 2018 runs from 19th to 24th November this year.
There are lots of events going on throughout the country, co-ordinated by Adoption UK and AFA Scotland. To find out more, click here.
The week provides a fantastic forum to encourage discussion about adoption and to inform and to inspire.
Adoption has changed beyond recognition in recent years. Where in years gone by babies were sometimes relinquished for adoption that rarely happens now. Most adopted children are now adopted from care. They tend to be older (three or four years old on average) or in specific groups (sibling groups, those with additional needs or from minority ethnic backgrounds). Modern adoption is about finding families for the most vulnerable children in our society because they are unable to grow up in their birth families.
The legal changes (The Adoption and Children (Scotland) Act 2007, in force since 2009) opened the door for single people and unmarried couples, including gay couples, to adopt jointly. Age limits for adopters were scrapped, allowing older people to consider building a family by adoption.
Adoption isn’t for the faint-hearted. The trauma that a child suffers in early life, and even before birth, can have a life-long impact. Adoption Week Scotland allows Adoption Agencies and charities to inform and inspire.
