Our archives show a lengthy genealogy of firms that have merged with us or asked us to take over their client list. Indeed, Messrs Fothringham and Lindsay originally set up their firm in 1815 because another lawyer said they were “clever young men”, and that, since he was “becoming an old man”, they were welcome to his business.
Below we highlight a few important mergers in more recent years. They’ve helped us grow from 11 partners in the early 1990s to 41 partners and over 200 staff today.
Our biggest merger to date - Miller Hendry
We are merging with legal practice Miller Hendry on 30 May 2023 which will be our largest merger to date.
This merger will see Miller Hendry's seven partners and about 50 staff transfer to Lindsays, as well as providing their clients with the wider range of legal services available as part of the enlarged firm, which will be known as Lindsays.
This addition will further strengthen our proposition in Tayside, adding offices in Perth and Crieff to our existing offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Our enlarged firm will comprise almost 50 partners and 300 staff.

Further growth in Edinburgh – Hadden Rankin
On 28 October 2019 our merger with Edinburgh-based legal practice, Hadden Rankin brought the founding Partners, Ross Hadden and Dot Rankin, and their team to Lindsays.
Edinburgh growth – Aitken Nairn W.S.
On 22 January 2018, the well-established Edinburgh firm Aitken Nairn W.S. merged with Lindsays welcoming two Partners, Kenneth Stanley and Morag Yellowlees, along with 15 members of staff.
Tayside expansion – RSB Macdonald
In July 2015 Dundee based RSB Macdonald merged with Lindsays. Our merged firm is known as RSB Lindsays in Tayside. This merger brought significant growth with five partners and 23 members of staff joining the firm.
RSB Lindsays operates from offices in Dundee City Centre at Crichton Street and from Seabraes House at Greenmarket. We now offer our Tayside clients a wide range of legal services to help with their personal, family or business affairs.
Edinburgh growth – MacLachlan & MacKenzie
2012 also brought a merger with MacLachlan & MacKenzie of Edinburgh, known for its strength in residential property and private client work. The 26 members of the MacLachlan & MacKenzie and MacMac Residential teams transferred over to Lindsays.
First presence in Dundee – Shield & Kyd
We gained our first presence in Tayside in 2012 when we merged with Shield & Kyd, which itself had nineteenth-century origins and offices in Dundee and Edinburgh.
Westward expansion - Kidstons
Another key deal in Lindsays’ recent history was a merger with Glasgow-based Kidstons in 2008. Kidstons had a strong reputation in employment, litigation, private client and residential property.
This was a major strategic development for Lindsays – not just a matter of gaining new premises and staff, but a statement of ambition.
All our mergers bring new talent and new clients, and are exciting times. But we don’t let the excitement detract from our traditional tenets of relationships, results, approachability and flexibility.
Whichever office you deal with, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Dundee, we still aim for the best experience and outcomes for you, your family or your business.
